Leap Day Geocaching
This year is leap year. And yesterday was leap day.
This last summer, I was in charge of teaching the geocaching merit badge to boy scouts. Through teaching the merit badge, I became really interested in geocaching, and it has become one of my hobbies.
The best way to get connected to the geocaching community is through geocaching.com website. This year, geocaching.com decided to celebrate leap day by placing a goal to set a record number of logged finds in a single day. I decided to join their efforts and contribute to the number of finds for the 29th of February.
To start off the day, I attended my first event cache. It was held at Aggie Ice Cream. Everybody who showed up signed a card with their caching name and then a group photo was taken to document the event. As soon as the event finished, I got into my car and drove to Brigham City, UT to pursue my second find for the day.
I set a personal goal to find the geocache located near the B on the side of the mountain in Brigham City on leap day. I have a good friend who lives in Brigham City that knows the area really well. So, I invited him to come with me and he accepted. The hike took a little longer than I expected, but we found the cache! It was so exciting!
A view of the B. It's higher up than it looks!
It was very gray and cloudy. A big snow storm was blowing in.
It was pretty cold and windy up there. Did I mention a snow storm was blowing in?
A big gust of wind hit me in the face just as I pushed the button to take the photo...

After we got off the mountain, I took him home and moved on to my third find of the day. My third find was located by the Brigham City Pool. I had actually searched for this one three times before leap day, but had never found it. This time, I walked straight to it and picked it up. I was so excited that, after looking around to make sure no one was watching, I did a little happy dance. I highly recommend it. Very clever hide. It is called "No Parking".
By this time, the snow storm was starting to hit Brigham and I decided I better leave so I could get through the canyon before it got too bad. So, I headed back to Logan. To finish off the day, I went to a second event cache. The snow was coming down hard and fast and the roads were very slick. Because of this, only 6 of us showed up to the event. We took some fun pictures and signed a log.
Told you there was a snow storm blowing in...
(Actually had about 8 inches by the time this picture was taken)
It was a good day. There was no better way to spend my day than geocaching. And there is no one I would rather spend it with than the one I hiked with.
